Inside SANDT

Our aim and mission

The Trust aims to act as a platform from which to increase awareness and wisely inform the South African public about dance and provide the opportunity for national, grand-scale productions to be performed bi-annually throughout South Africa.  This will offer the opportunity to collaborate and connect with all the professional dance companies and dance training organisations, orchestras and theatres.  Particular encouragement is given to organisations that foster performers from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

SANDT will provide professional support and cohesive input in order to stimulate local talent and creativity so that dance in South Africa can take a prominent place on the world stage. With exposure to this and with the professional support and encouragement from the Trust, we believe that dance in South Africa will be elevated to that of an international standard.

Veronica Paeper (Artistic Director)

Veronica Paeper was born in Port Shepstone, Natal. She received her ballet training under the tutelage of Dulcie Howes at the UCT Ballet School, where she also studied with David Poole.  During her performing career Veronica rose to become a principal dancer with three South African companies: CAPAB Ballet, PACT Ballet and PACOFS Ballet.

Veronica began choreographing in 1972. Her first work, created for CAPAB Ballet, was John the Baptist, a dramatic one act ballet set to music by Ernest Bloch. A prolific choreographer, Veronica has created more than 40 ballets, among them sixteen full-length works.

On 1st October 1987 Veronica Paeper was appointed Assistant Director of CAPAB Ballet, retaining her position as resident choreographer. When David Poole retired, she took up the post as Director of CAPAB Ballet on 1 January 1991.

She has won the coveted Nederburg Award for Ballet in the Cape in 1980 and 1992, and in 1993 she shared with Peter Klatzow the Artes Award for best Contribution to Serious Music and Dance for their collaboration on Hamlet.

In 2009 she formed The South African National Dance Trust together with fellow Trustees, Mike Bosazza and Robyn Taylor.

Robyn Taylor (Project Director/Fundraiser)

Robyn was born and raised in Durban where she learnt dance with Iris Manning between the ages of 4 – 18. The opportunities that were offered to her in being a Miss South Africa finalist in 1981 opened up her venture into the fashion world.

Based in Johannesburg for 10 years and being involved in the business world of fashion was the ideal preparation for her relocation to Cape Town in 1997. It was here that Robyn discovered that there was a need for fund-raising in the performing arts field.

This is when she began successfully raising funds, creating awareness and making a difference to organisations on a voluntary basis. She was then offered professional opportunities with various Performing Arts organisations and successfully assisted them in establishing and sustaining themselves.

She was recently recognised by Classic Feel Magazine as one of the “Women in The Arts”, behind the scenes, who is making a difference.

Mike Bosazza (Education and Business Director)

Mike was born in Johannesburg and his introduction to ballet was through his older sisters’ ballet classes and eisteddfods. However it was his association with Dulcie Howes that got him really interested in ballet as an art form.

His career in the financial world was concentrated on the fiduciary side and included wills, estates and trusts.  He retired from BoE Trust Ltd (formerly Syfrets Trust Ltd) after forty years in the industry. He is particularly interested in the educational side of SANDT, as he feels that he learns about ballet and dance every time he attends a performance – and the more he learns, the more he enjoys it.

Mike was involved with Balletomanes for several years, was Chairman of The Friends of CAPAB Opera, was the founding Chairman of The Theatre Club and is a Trustee of and consultant to various cultural trusts including the Irma Stern Trust.
